Wake Technical Community College (N.C.) is the recipient of a $2.7M award from the U.S. Department of Education’s First in the World (FITW) grant program. FITW supports innovative programs that improve student outcomes. Wake Tech’s COMPASS project – – Constructing an Online Model to Promote At-Risk Student Success – will improve success among students of color in three high-demand online courses with low success rates and large achievement gaps between demographic groups. Course redesign will emphasize teaching, social, and cognitive presence to increase student interaction with instructors and peers, boost engagement, and reduce feelings of isolation, leading to higher persistence and degree completion rates.
Online courses can be game changers for students with competing priorities outside of the classroom, such as working and caring for family members. This award will benefit thousands of students by leading the way in improving online course instructional design and strategy. Congratulations to Wake Tech!
